Woodcut Print 350 x 500mm The “Hapu” series is characterised by the use of abstracted curved shapes which make reference to a Pakeha's interpretation of the original "Koru" for. This is a dialogue continued from the larger New Zealand works. Another main feature of the “Hapu” series is the embossing, which is used as a way of articulating the texture in the wood cutting aspect of the process. The paper’s malleability is used to communicate a strong connection between the physical three-dimensional carving process and the print. The choice of translucent blue and green inks harmonize the colour/surface relationship and allow the texture of the paper’s surface to remain a strong compositional feature. The viscosity and weightlessness of the inks is an integral part of linking these colour hues with the three-dimensionality of the embossing. More opaque and solid colour would smother the delicate texture. The break from the original reds and burnt orange hues used in the larger New Zealand suite also distinguish the “Hapu” prints from this original body of work, marking them as a tangent investigation.
